Mloganzila Hospital strengthens pediatric surgical services

Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH)–Mloganzila has continued to strengthen medical and surgical services for children with hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Over the past four years, 4,000 children have received healthcare services, and 600 have undergone surgery at the facility.

This was stated by the Assistant Director of Surgery, Dr. Godlove Mfuko—speaking on behalf of the MNH Executive Director—during the commemoration of the Day for Persons with Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida. The event was organized by the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Tanzania (ASBAHT) and held at MNH-Mloganzila.

Dr. Mfuko noted that the hospital has continued to expand its capacity to provide these services by securing specialized experts, including a highly specialized pediatric neurosurgeon, supported through the Samia Health Super Specialization Program.

He added that MNH-Mloganzila plans to become a Center of Excellence for pediatric neurosurgery and is also designating a specialized operating room for pediatric surgeries to address the growing demand for these services. He stated that the hospital aims to ensure that children with hydrocephalus (enlarged head) and spina bifida (open spine) who require surgery receive the procedure within 48 hours of their arrival, subject to an assessment of their medical condition.

Addressing the importance of prevention, Dr. Mfuko urged women planning to become pregnant, as well as those who are already pregnant, to take folic acid—under the guidance of healthcare professionals—as it helps reduce the risk of a child being born with developmental issues affecting the nervous system, including spina bifida.

He also emphasized the importance of universal health insurance in reducing financial barriers and ensuring the continuity of medical treatment.

The event brought together children living with hydrocephalus and spina bifida, their families from various regions, healthcare professionals, and development partners, with the goal of strengthening services, providing expert counseling, and raising public awareness regarding the prevention, treatment, care, and well-being of these children.
