Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila in collaboration with the Sickle Cell Society of Tanzania has provided education on Sickle Cell Disease, conducted free tests for the disease to students of Kibamba Secondary School and encouraged blood donation as part of the World Sickle Cell Day celebrations which are celebrated annually on June 19.
Speaking during the celebrations, MNH-Mloganzila Laboratory Science Specialist, Mr. Wilson Hape, said that many Sickle Cell patients require regular blood transfusions, thus he urged citizens to come forward in large numbers to donate blood to save the lives of these patients.
He said it is important for citizens to undergo Sickle Cell tests to understand their health status, as some people live with the disease without knowing it.
He said that this step will help reduce and ultimately break the chain of the disease for future generations. The theme of this year’s celebration is
“Let’s Take Action for Equality: Increasing the Life Chances of Sickle Cell Patients”, he said
The leadership of Kibamba Secondary School has thanked Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila and stakeholders for providing education and services for Sickle Cell testing for students.
In parallel with the event, Kibamba Jogging Club participated in a blood donation drive, where a total of 20 bottles of blood were obtained, a move that contributed to increasing the availability of safe blood to serve patients who need blood transfusions. On World Sickle Cell Day
