TANESCO launches dedicated electric vehicle charging stations

Dodoma: Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) has launched a project for charging stations for electric vehicles and an On-Bill Financing (OBF) scheme, a move that opens a new chapter in electricity consumption in the country and accelerates the implementation of the clean energy agenda.

Launching the projects in Dodoma, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi (MP) on June 11, 2026 said the move demonstrates Tanzania’s commitment to fully participate in the global clean energy transformation while aiming to improve the lives of citizens and boost the economy.

“This move expands the use of electricity from cooking to transportation with the aim of improving the lives of citizens, reducing the cost of living and stimulating the growth of the national economy”, said Hon. Ndejembi.

He said the Government has continued to make significant investments in the energy sector, which has enabled the country’s electricity production to reach more than 4,000 megawatts and laid the foundation for the widespread use of electricity in various sectors of the economy.

In order to enhance the use of electric vehicles, TANESCO in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has received 50 modern charging stations from the Chinese company AUTEL. The stations will be installed in various strategic locations in the country to facilitate charging services.

Speaking at the event, TANESCO’s Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the Corporation is committed to leading the transformation of electricity consumption in the country by taking advantage of the availability of sufficient electricity.

“The previous view that electricity is expensive and its use is limited to lighting has changed significantly. Today, many citizens use electricity for cooking and various economic activities, while the step of launching charging stations for electric vehicles opens a new page in the use of clean energy in the country,” said Mr. Twange.

In terms of clean cooking energy, TANESCO has begun implementing the On-Bill Financing (OBF) Program that will enable customers to obtain electric stoves on credit and make repayments through their regular LUKU electricity purchases.

In addition, the Dodoma Regional Commissioner, Rosemary Senyamule, has commended TANESCO for the move and emphasized the importance of continuing to promote the use of clean energy in the country.

“I commend TANESCO for this strategic move that opens up new opportunities for the use of clean energy in the country. It is important to continue to encourage citizens to use clean energy in transportation and cooking to accelerate development and preserve the environment”, said Senyamule.

The launch of the projects marks a new step in expanding electricity use in the country from normal household use to the transportation, cooking and asset production sectors, in line with the National efforts towards a green economy and sustainable development.
