Three Religious and Media Figures Highlight Due Process and Responsible Journalism
Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) held an online press conference on human rights and religious freedom on September 4 with Ethiopian partners from the religious and media sectors.
Participants discussed human rights, religious freedom, due process and the roles of journalists and religious leaders in promoting peace, while exploring ways to continue their cooperation.
The meeting was organized to develop a proposal for regular gatherings raised at a July meeting with Ethiopian journalists and to strengthen cooperation with existing partners.
After information, a press conference video and media materials were shared, three speakers from the religious and media sectors delivered presentations.
Pastor Abraham Sorato Selato of Grace Life Community Church emphasized that human rights and the rule of law must operate together.
He said that due process, the presumption of innocence, proportionality and human dignity should be upheld, and that age and humanitarian circumstances may be considered when assessing whether detention of an elderly defendant is necessary.
Adane Dechassa Teshale, Senior Officer for Conflict Prevention and Resolution at the Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia (IRCE), described human dignity and rights as both biblical values and fundamental principles protected by Ethiopia’s Constitution.
He urged religious leaders to teach justice and peace, speak for marginalized people, and build bridges between communities through respectful dialogue with other faith leaders and local authorities.
Dr. Ayele Addis Ambelu, News Director of Africa News Channel, said his participation in HWPL activities had reinforced the importance of peace, dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding. He emphasized that journalists should practice accurate, balanced and responsible reporting and promote understanding rather than division.
HWPL plans to continue regular engagement with its Ethiopian partners and explore joint content and follow-up media activities on human rights and peace. The organization aims to expand a sustainable foundation for cooperation among religious leaders, journalists and civil society.
