JNHPP project is an economic opportunity for the community – Committee

The Julius Nyerere Dam Project (JNHPP) Steering Committee, on February 26, 2026, reviewed the progress of the Julius Nyerere Dam power generation and expressed satisfaction with its management and implementation, which met quality standards consistent with the value for money invested by the Government.

The Chairman of the Committee, who is also the Permanent Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities), Dr. Jim Yonazi said the committee was pleased with the way the dam is stimulating economic growth by increasing the production of electricity distributed in various areas of the country, a step that contributes to improving access to electricity.

“We are satisfied with the way this project was managed and implemented with great efficiency. Compared to other projects in Africa, this project has been built with high quality and has brought relief to the electricity service in the country. This is a great achievement for the Nation”, explained Dr. Yonazi.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Director of Policy and Planning, Mr. Petro Lyatuu, said the project is 100 percent complete and its contribution has already begun to be seen.

He said in 2021, the national grid had a total of 1,600 megawatts, but currently the production capacity has reached more than 4,000 megawatts, more than double the previous level.

“The dam is currently generating electricity and its productivity has been clearly seen. The increase in production has strengthened the national grid and we continue to strengthen the energy sector for the development of the country and the welfare of the people”, stressed Mr. Lyatuu.

He said on February 25, 2026, the Committee visited the Chalinze power receiving and cooling station, which receives electricity from the Julius Nyerere Dam and distributes it to various parts of the country.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO), Deputy Managing Director for Production, Engineer Antony Mbushi, said the facility has been completed and is already operational.

He said the construction of the Chalinze to Dodoma transmission line has reached 71.58 percent, while the Chalinze to Kinyerezi to Mkuranga transmission project has reached 59.76 percent.

“The Committee is satisfied with the progress of the projects and emphasizes that the current plan is to continue to increase production to ensure reliable and sustainable electricity supply”, added Engineer Mbushi

At the conclusion of the visit, the Committee stated that the implementation of strategic electricity projects is making Tanzania an investment attraction and a hub for electricity distribution in the East, Central and Southern Africa region.
