PRIME MINISTER, Kassim Majaliwa has said that the mining sector has continued to be a pillar of the country’s economy, where in 2022 the sector has grown by 10.9 percent and reached a contribution of 10.1 percent to the National GDP in 2024, compared to 9.0 percent in 2023.
He made the statement, September 22, 2025 during the launch of the Eighth Geita Region Mining Technology Exhibition, held at the Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan grounds.
He said that the move is a result of various efforts of the sixth-phase Government including the strengthening of revenue collection systems and control of the mining trade, the use of electronic systems (online mining cadastre system), the presence of mining markets and the monitoring of investment contracts.
“The Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of His Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued to prioritize strengthening the investment environment in the mining sector so that mineral resources contribute to economic growth and the well-being of all Tanzanians”, he said
The Prime Minister has advised stakeholders in the mining sector to continue investing in technology as it is the bridge to transformation from research and extraction, refining and trading of minerals.
“Without the right technology, it is impossible to increase productivity, ensure the safety of miners, protect the environment, or add value to our minerals”, he said
He said through the exhibition, during the period 2021 to 2025, Geita small-scale miners have produced more than 22,000 kilograms of gold worth 3.44 trillion shillings, while the Government received more than 235.5 billion shillings as royalties.
He said that large companies like Geita Gold Mine and Buckreef during that period have produced 76,530 kilograms of gold worth 11.38 trillion shillings and the Government has received more than 793 billion shillings as royalties.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Minerals, Engineer Yahya Samamba said Tanzania has now made progress in having factories manufacturing various mining equipment.
“In the 2024-2025 financial year, we have been able to produce 62 tons of gold, unlike in the past, we were producing 40-50 tons every year, this makes Tanzania among the top five countries in Africa in gold production”, he said
The Geita Regional Commissioner, Mr. Martine Shigela said that you have done a great job of distributing electricity to rural areas and since mining work requires electricity, electricity has already been sent to many small-scale miners’ areas.
“We have worked on the instructions of His Excellency the President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to provide electricity to small-scale miners’ areas so that they can do their work and have reliable production in their areas”, he said
