The Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila for the first time in the country has performed a surgical service to remove a tumor in the large intestine using small incisions (lapascopic lower anterior resection) on a patient who had the problem.
Describing the surgery, the Surgeon specializing in Abdominal and Liver Surgery, MNH-Mloganzila, Dr. Richard Mliwa said the surgery took about two hours which is a short time compared to open surgery which takes about four hours.
Dr. Mliwa noted that the surgery was possible due to the large investment made by the Government in medical equipment, infrastructure for providing services and building the capacity of experts who are always providing services by involving various disciplines thus providing appropriate treatment to the patient.
Dr. Mliwa explained some of the benefits of the service include the patient not experiencing severe pain, the patient staying in the ward for a short time, the patient not losing much blood during surgery, the patient not having a large scar and reducing the time the patient spends caring for the wound.
Muhimbili National Hospital Mloganzila is among the hospitals that have distinguished themselves by introducing cutting-edge services that are not available in the country and reducing the inconvenience for many Tanzanians to travel abroad to seek such treatment.
