The government through the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) has entered a new phase of increasing electricity generation sources after signing an agreement for the implementation of the second phase of the Kishapu Solar Power Project that will generate a total of 100 megawatts.
The move comes after the completion of the first phase of the project with a total capacity of 50 megawatts and its integration into the National Grid, which increased the capacity and stability of the grid and enhanced access to electricity in various areas of the country.
Speaking at the event, July 27, 2026, the Minister of Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, said the energy sector is a pillar of national development where the Government continues to make efforts to increase diversified sources of electricity generation (Energy Mix) to ensure that Tanzania does not rely on a single source of electricity generation.
“The people of these areas were dependent on electricity that was transported from long distances. The completion of this project will make Tanzania a more secure electricity system and a model country in climate-resilient electricity production,” explained Hon. Ndejembi.
He thanked the French Development Agency (AFD) for continuing to collaborate with the Government of Tanzania through soft loan financing. He said the collaboration shows the great confidence of development partners in the management and implementation of strategic projects in the country.
He also commended TANESCO for continuing to oversee the implementation of large-scale electricity projects that are changing the image of the country’s energy sector, while urging it to ensure that the project is closely monitored at every stage so that it is completed within the scheduled time and begins to benefit the people.
The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Subira Mgalu, said the implementation of the project clearly demonstrates the commitment of the Ministry of Energy to direct 97% of its budget to the implementation of development projects.
“This signing is a result of the good diplomacy of our President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, which has made our development partners continue to trust Tanzania in the implementation of electricity generation, transmission and distribution projects. We believe that Tanzania will continue to have sufficient electricity”, stressed Hon. Mgalu.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of TANESCO, Hon. Ambassador Zuhura Bundala, said the Board closely supervised the implementation of the first phase of the project and was satisfied with the manner in which it was implemented considering the value for money invested. He said the signing of the second phase is another important step that demonstrates the success of the project.
TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the cost of the entire Kishapu Solar Power Project with a capacity to generate 150 megawatts is approximately 323 billion Shillings. Of this amount, the first phase with a capacity to generate 50 megawatts has cost 118.6 billion Shillings, while the second phase with a capacity to generate 100 megawatts is expected to cost approximately 204.4 billion Shillings.
“This project will be implemented over a period of 17 months in partnership between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania through TANESCO and the French Development Agency (AFD), which has provided a soft loan,” explained Mr. Twange.
The agreement was signed between TANESCO and a consortium of two companies from France and Tunisia, namely Sagemcom Energy, Telecom SAS and STEG International Services.
