Didier Drogba appointed ambassador for Afcon 2027 in Tanzania

The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan has asked former Chelsea star, Didier Drogba, to be Tanzania’s ambassador for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals.

The 2027 Afcon finals will be held in Tanzania starting June next year, with Tanzania co-hosting with its neighbours Kenya and Uganda.

President Samia’s statement came after the two held talks on Tuesday May 05, 2026 at State House in Dodoma shortly after the player, who also played for the Ivory Coast national team, arrived in the country at the special invitation of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Mr. Paul Makonda.

President Samia also called on the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports to collaborate with Drogba and use his experience in sports including the establishment of academies as a way to promote sports in the country.

For his part, Drogba thanked President Samia for the invitation and promised to cooperate with Tanzania in all matters of developing sports.

Drogba gained more fame in football, especially in the 2000s, when with Chelsea he won the Premier League title several times, the Champions League title and won the top scorer award.

In parallel, Drogba has also made a great contribution to the Ivory Coast national team and actively participated in various social issues in the country.

After retiring from football, he entered the race to seek leadership in the Ivory Coast Football Federation, although the plan was not successful.
