Kilwa District Commissioner, Mr. Mohamed Nyundo has commended TANESCO for its efforts and readiness to ensure electricity reaches the Kilwa Fishing Port construction project, which is expected to have a major contribution to economic opportunities.
Hon. Nyundo said this on May 06, 2026, after a visit by TANESCO CEO, Mr. Lazaro Twange, to the Kilwa Fishing Port construction project, with the aim of checking whether the electricity receiving infrastructure has been completed.
He said that despite TANESCO being ready to deliver electricity to the port, the contractor has not yet completed the systems to receive electricity from TANESCO.
“I would like to congratulate you, MD, for arriving with your team of experts. You have seen for yourself the needs that TANESCO should provide, and we have seen that the contractor has not yet completed some of the systems in his area to receive electricity service from you,” said Mr. Nyundo
TANESCO CEO, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said TANESCO has enough electricity, and a 33-kilovolt transmission line has already been built from Somanga to supply electricity to the fishing port.
He explained the ongoing efforts to expand the Singino, Kilwa, power receiving and cooling station, by adding a 5 MVA transformer to improve the availability of electricity in those areas.
“Basically, TANESCO has enough electricity for the port. We know that this port, if operational, will require approximately 2.5 megawatts of electricity. We will provide electricity directly from our Somanga power station,” explained Mr. Twange.
Director Twange’s visit is aimed at inspecting ongoing power projects in the Coast, Lindi and Mtwara regions.
