ZANZIBAR: The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hon. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has urged the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) to quickly complete the construction of modern bus stations that will be used in the Electric Bus Project, so that citizens can begin to fully benefit from the service.
President Dr. Mwinyi said this, July 13, 2026, during the opening of the Malindi Bus Station and the launch of public transport services using electric buses, an event held in Malindi, West Urban Region.
He said the project aims to provide citizens with better, safer and more reliable transport services, in parallel with improving the transport system and enhancing the city’s character.
President Dr. Mwinyi said the Government’s goal is to ensure that transport vehicles coming from outlying areas end up at bus stops that will be built on the outskirts of the city, with electric buses providing services within the Western Urban Region.
He said the introduction of electric buses is part of the Government’s commitment to promote the use of clean energy in the transport sector, a move that will help preserve the environment and reduce air pollution.
Alise said the new transport service system will provide relief to citizens, especially the elderly and students, and enable them to travel easily without disruption.
President Dr. Mwinyi has called on authorities responsible for road infrastructure to control the encroachment of road reserves, including the construction of shops and other buildings by some citizens in those areas.
He has called on citizens to continue to support the implementation of development projects and be guardians of infrastructure being built in various areas for their benefit.
Speaking about the implementation of major projects, President Dr. Mwinyi has assured the citizens that the Government will continue to implement its commitments in the infrastructure, water, ports, airports, roads, hospitals and sports fields sectors.
He said that no Government project has been stopped and that the pace of implementation will be increased to achieve the goals of bringing development for the benefit of the people of Zanzibar.
President Dr. Mwinyi has explained that the Sports City, which includes a large stadium that will be used in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition, is expected to cost US $ 150 million, equivalent to approximately 300 billion shillings.
He said the project does not only include the AFCON stadium, but also an Olympic-sized swimming pool, training grounds, conference halls and hotels.
He said the Sports City will stimulate sports tourism, increase the number of visitors to Zanzibar and open up various economic opportunities for the citizens.
President Dr. Mwinyi also commended citizens who are donating their lands for the implementation of development projects, saying their cooperation is important in achieving the Government’s mission to strengthen services and infrastructure.
He commended ZSSF for quickly completing the construction of a playground for children in the area near the Malindi Bus Terminal, a move that will enable children in those areas to participate in sports.
The event also coincided with the launch of special transport cards, including a gold card for students, black for seniors and blue for other passengers.
