📍Tunduru, Ruvuma: The Minister of Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of implementation of the 220 kV Transmission Line Project from Songea to Masasi via Tunduru and ordered the contractor to increase efforts to ensure that the project is completed on time.
Speaking during the inspection of the progress of the project, July 22, 2026, Hon. Ndejembi said the Government would not be willing to see strategic projects that affect the lives of citizens delayed without reasonable grounds.
He said the project is among the important projects of the Energy Sector given priority by the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, due to its contribution in enhancing access to electricity and stimulating economic development in the Southern region.
“The progress of this project is not satisfactory compared to the time since its implementation began. The Government expects to see a greater pace of implementation in the remaining period. I have instructed the Permanent Secretary to closely monitor the implementation of these instructions and ensure that appropriate measures are taken if there are no visible improvements”, said Mr. Ndejembi.
The Nyasa District Commissioner, Mr. Boniface Magiri, who represented the Ruvuma Regional Commissioner, said the Region will continue to collaborate with the Central Government in monitoring the implementation of the project to ensure it is completed and begins providing services to the citizens on time.
And Hon. Sikudhani Chikambo on behalf of the Ruvuma Regional Members of Parliament, the leaders thanked the Government for continuing to invest in electricity infrastructure that will stimulate economic growth, investment and improve social services in the Southern parts of Tanzania.
The 220 kV Transmission Line Project from Songea via Tunduru to Masasi is being implemented by the Contractor Kalpataru Power from India. The project is expected to connect Lindi and Mtwara Regions to the National Grid as well as enhance access to electricity in Tunduru District and surrounding areas.
