INDIA: The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hon. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that the historical relationship between Tanzania and India has continued to strengthen through political, diplomatic, economic and social cooperation and the implementation of various projects that have brought positive changes to the people.
President Dr. Mwinyi said this, on July 19, 2026, when he met with the Vice President of India, Hon. C. P. Radhakrishnan, at the Vice-President’s Enclave, in New Delhi.
President Dr. Mwinyi is satisfied with the growth in trade in goods between Tanzania and India, which has reached US$ 9.02 billion in the financial year 2025/2026 from US$ 8.64 billion in the financial year 2024/2025. In addition, India is among the major sources of investment in Tanzania, where its total investment has reached approximately $4.08 billion.
He said that this growth indicates the existence of greater opportunities to expand trade and investment, while inviting Indian companies and institutions to invest in Zanzibar in priority sectors.
He explained that the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar is committed to building a new permanent campus that will increase academic programs, research activities, innovation, technology and training, in order to make Zanzibar an internationally trusted academic center that will enable students, researchers, government employees and professionals from Africa to obtain high-level education and expertise without having to travel to India.
President Dr. Mwinyi commended cooperation in the health sector, staff training, capacity building of public sector executives, digital transformation and the use of technology in improving service delivery to citizens.
Speaking about investment opportunities, President Dr. Mwinyi said the Government has placed the Blue Economy sector among its top development priorities, integrating the fisheries, marine products, seaweed farming, tourism, maritime transport, oil and gas exploration and extraction and port development sectors.
He has encouraged Indian companies to invest in Zanzibar in deep sea fishing, processing of marine products and value addition of seaweed products.
President Dr. Mwinyi also stated that tourism contributes approximately 30 percent of Zanzibar’s GDP and has a significant role in increasing employment, foreign exchange earnings and other economic activities.
President Dr. Mwinyi has invited the Vice President of India to visit Zanzibar at a convenient time, to witness the progress achieved and to continue discussions on new opportunities for cooperation.
For his part, the Vice President of India, Hon. C. P. Radhakrishnan, has congratulated President Dr. Mwinyi on being elected to lead Zanzibar for a second term and for the significant progress that continues to be achieved under his leadership.
He said India values ​​the long-standing relationship between it and Tanzania and will continue to cooperate in the implementation of development projects, staff training, education, health, water, energy, digital transformation.
Hon. Radhakrishnan said President Dr. Mwinyi’s visit to India will provide a new impetus in strengthening relations between the two countries and open up more opportunities for beneficial cooperation for the people.
He promised that the Government of India will continue to cooperate with Tanzania in joint projects, including education, solar energy, digital services, capacity building for executives and investment in sectors that promote sustainable development.
After the talks, President Dr. Mwinyi visited the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, Raj Ghat, in New Delhi, where he and his wife Hon. Mama Mariam Mwinyi laid a wreath in honor of the renowned leader of the Indian independence movement and peace advocate.
President Dr. Mwinyi is in India on a visit that began on 17 July 2026 in Chennai and continued in New Delhi, where he participated in various activities and spoke with Indian Government leaders about strengthening cooperation in development sectors.
The visit, which is expected to end on 20 July 2026, has included participation in the 63rd Convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), visits to research and innovation centers, as well as meetings with senior leaders of the Indian Government.
