Dar es Salaam: The Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) has continued to strengthen the quality management of infrastructure construction projects in the country through its modern laboratories that conduct inspections and verification of construction materials as well as works being carried out, a step that contributes to building strong, safe and long-lasting infrastructure.
Speaking at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba), a Structural Engineer from the TARURA Research and Quality Control Unit at Headquarters, Mr. Jacob Manguye said the laboratories play an important role in ensuring that all road, bridge and other infrastructure projects comply with professional standards and contract terms before and after implementation.
He said laboratory experts conduct detailed tests of construction materials before they are used in projects in parallel with verifying the quality of works carried out by contractors to ensure they meet the required standards.
”We carry out inspections of various works including rubble, asphalt, bridges and other infrastructure to ensure that the projects being implemented are of high quality and last for a long time”, said Mr. Manguye.
He said that TARURA currently has a main laboratory located at the Headquarters in Dodoma and 14 other laboratories distributed in various regions of the country including Kigoma, Arusha and Moshi. These laboratories provide services for testing construction materials and verifying the quality of projects with the aim of increasing efficiency and value for money in the implementation of development projects.
He said that TARURA owns a special soil testing facility (Geotech) that enables it to conduct detailed studies on the ability of soil to support the construction of bridges, buildings and other large infrastructure before construction begins, a step that helps reduce the risks of infrastructure damage and increase user safety.
Mr. Manguye has called on contractors, engineers, construction institutions and other stakeholders in the sector to use TARURA’s laboratory services to ensure that all projects being implemented meet the required standards and continue to provide quality services to the public.
