Morogoro: The construction of a 400 kV power transmission line from Chalinze to Dodoma with a length of 345 kilometers has reached 89 percent of implementation and is expected to be completed by August 21, 2026, a move that will increase the capacity to transport electricity and strengthen the stability of the National Grid.
Reviewing the progress of the project, July 1, 2026, the Minister of Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi (Mb) said the project is among the Government’s strategic investments aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity transmission infrastructure and increasing the capacity of the National Grid to serve the increasing demand.
He said the power transmission line is of great importance due to facilitating the transport of electricity generated by the Julius Nyerere Power Plant with a capacity to generate 2,115 megawatts.
Minister Ndejembi said the Government will continue to invest in electricity projects to ensure reliable electricity services continue to reach Tanzanians and meet the needs of various production sectors.
“The Government has seen that the demand for electricity in the country is increasing, so the construction of this electricity line is very important as it will bring stability to the National Grid,” said Hon. Ndejembi.
TANESCO’s Managing Director, Mr. Razalo Twange, said the increase in investment in electricity infrastructure has contributed to the increase in the number of customers connected to the service, where in the financial year 2025/26 the Corporation has written history by connecting more than eight hundred thousand customers to electricity.
“This has never happened since Tanzania gained independence. This shows that the demand for electricity has increased, and therefore we continue to increase the electricity infrastructure”, stressed Mr. Twange.
Reporting on the implementation of the project, the Project Manager, Engineer Newton Mwakifamba said the work is progressing well and is expected to be completed on August 21, 2026 according to the contract schedule.
