Kongwa: Citizens of Gairo, Mpwapwa, Kongwa, Chamwino and Kiteto districts are expected to benefit from a more reliable electricity service following the completion of projects to strengthen the electricity supply system implemented by the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) at a cost of more than 10.5 billion shillings.
The projects involve a Switching Station, an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) with a capacity of 20 MVA and a 33 kilowatt power transmission line from the Zuzu Electricity Receiving and Cooling Station to Mbande with a length of 92 kilometers.
Launching the projects, June 16, 2026 in the Mbande area, Kongwa District, the Minister of Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi said the investment is part of the efforts of the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensure that citizens have reliable electricity service for social and economic activities.
He said that the projects have brought great improvements in the electricity distribution system in the region, where previously the errors that were occurring in one area caused the citizens of other areas to lack electricity service for a while.
“This station has strengthened the availability of reliable electricity. We are very grateful to Mr. President for the large investment that has been made. In the past, the challenges were great, especially during the rainy season when errors in one district affected services in another district. Today we are witnessing the results of this investment for the benefit of our citizens,” said Hon. Ndejembi
The Minister noted that the Government will continue to invest in the energy sector through various strategic projects aimed at strengthening the production, transportation and distribution of electricity in the country to match the pace of development of the Nation and the needs of the people.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Subira Mgalu, said the implementation of electricity projects continues to bring positive results to the people and contribute to the achievement of the Government’s development agenda.
“We are relieved to see the great work done by TANESCO to ensure that Tanzanians get reliable electricity. In the past there were challenges of frequent power outages in these areas, but the Sixth Phase Government has invested heavily through TANESCO and the results are clearly visible,” said Hon. A piece of wood.
And the Head of Kongwa District, Hon. Mayeka Simon Mayeka, urged the citizens and investors to use the opportunity of access to reliable electricity to start various wealth production activities including processing industries, business and other economic activities that will stimulate the development of the area.
On his part, the CEO of TANESCO, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said that for a long time the people of Kongwa and the surrounding areas depended on a single 33 kilowatt power line from Dodoma City, a situation that was causing challenges in the availability of reliable electricity due to the increase in demand for the service.
He said that the completion of the projects has strengthened the electricity distribution system in the region and significantly reduced the challenges that were affecting the availability of services.
“Initially there was one electricity transmission line passing through five different districts. The increase in electricity demand along with investment opportunities started to bring challenges in the provision of services. Since these projects started working, we have witnessed great improvements and the challenges that were affecting the services have decreased by more than 90 percent,” said Mr. Twange.
The completion of the projects is expected to further strengthen access to electricity, increase investment opportunities, promote economic activities and improve the provision of social services in Gairo, Mpwapwa, Kongwa, Chamwino and Kiteto Districts.
