The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has led thousands of football fans to witness the Union League final between Simba and Yanga, played at the New Amaan Complex Stadium, Mjini Magharibi Region.
The Simba team has succeeded in winning the championship trophy after defeating Yanga by one goal to zero, scored by player Selemani Mwalimu in the 120th minute of the intense and exciting game, following a goalless draw in the regular 90 minutes.
President Dr. Mwinyi, has presented the championship trophy to Simba captain, Shomari Kapombe and a check for 150 million shillings.
Apart from the championship, Simba also won the titles of Best Coach, Best Defender, Best Scorer and Youngest Player in the tournament.
He has presented a check for 100 million shillings to Yanga captain, Bakari Mwamnyeto, after they emerged as the second winners of the league organized specifically to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
Eight teams participated in the tournament, four from Zanzibar namely Muembe Makumbi, Mlandege, KVZ and Mafunzo and four from Mainland Tanzania namely Simba Sports Club, Singida Big Stars, Azam FC and Young Africans.
Yanga are the defending champions of the cup after winning it last year by defeating Azam FC in the final game played at Gombani Stadium, Chakechake, Pemba.
The 2026 Union League final has been specially organized to honor the founders of the Union, the First President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and the First President of Zanzibar, the late Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume.
