The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan and the President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, have witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to develop Tanga into a regional energy hub.
The leaders witnessed the signing on August 6, 2026 during President Museveni’s working visit to the country at the invitation of his host, President Dr. Samia.
The agreement involves the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) and Vitol Bahrain Oil and Energy Trading Company E.C. Initially, the two leaders held face-to-face talks after President Dr. Samia welcomed President Museveni to State House.
Speaking about the agreement, the Minister of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, said it aims to develop Tanga into a regional energy hub by leveraging its strategic geographical position and existing energy transportation infrastructure.
Minister Ndejembi added that the agreement reflects the commitment of African countries to collaborate as strategic partners in planning, financing and implementing large strategic projects that stimulate economic growth and regional development.
Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Monica Masanza, said the agreement is an important step in implementing the long-term vision of Tanzania and Uganda’s cooperation in the energy sector.
He said the energy, oil and mining sectors play a key role in Africa’s development, explaining that the project will stimulate youth employment, promote trade and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
