The Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) has said that the 400 Kilovolt Power Transmission Line Project from Chalinze to Dodoma is in the final stages of its implementation, with construction being 94% complete and expected to be completed by August 21, 2026.
Speaking to journalists, on July 28, 2026, TANESCO’s Acting Director of Communications and Customer Service, Ms. Irene Gowelle, said that to facilitate the completion of the project, there will be a temporary power outage in some areas of the country on a specific schedule in two phases, where the first phase will be from July 30 to August 4 and the second will start from August 11 to 17, 2026.
Ms. Gowelle said the move is part of the preparation of the request of the contractor implementing the project, TBEA, which aims to ensure that the work is carried out in a safe manner.
“This project has reached a very important stage of implementation where during this period, some of the 220 and 132 kilovolt electricity transmission lines will have to be temporarily shut down to allow the work of pulling and connecting new cables to be carried out safely. This is a normal step in the implementation of major electricity transmission infrastructure projects and aims to complete this project of great benefit to the Nation”, said Mrs. Gowelle.
She said some areas in the Central Zone, Lake Zone, Northern Zone, Western Zone and South-West Zone may be affected at different times according to the schedules for the implementation of the works.
Mrs. Gowelle said TANESCO will continue to provide information to the public through the media, social networks and various communication platforms to enable customers to plan their electricity consumption based on the schedules that will be provided.
He stressed that Tanzania has sufficient electricity and that the interruption is temporary, as part of the completion of the strategic project aimed at strengthening the country’s electricity transmission capacity. He added that the Dar es Salaam, Coast, Lindi and Mtwara regions will not be affected by the interruption schedule.
The Project Manager for the 400 Kilovolt Chalinze-Dodoma Transmission Line, Engineer Newton Mwakifwamba said that the 345-kilometer long project worth approximately 514 billion shillings has been 100% funded by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.
He said the project involves the construction of a new transmission line as well as the expansion of the Chalinze and Dodoma transmission and distribution stations.
“In these final stages, we will carry out works to cross and connect the new power line in the Mkambarani, Kikombo and Mkonze areas. These steps are important to ensure that the project starts operating efficiently and safely”, said Engineer Mwakifwamba.
He added that the completion of the project will strengthen the capacity of the national electricity transmission system and facilitate the transmission of electricity generated at the Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam to various parts of the country, a move that will strengthen the security of access to electricity and stimulate economic and social development.
