📍Dar es Salaam: Geologist from the Office of the Njombe Regional Resident Minerals Officer, Mr. Abbas Mruma, has said that Tanzania continues to build an important position in the world due to its large reserves of strategically important minerals, including graphite, lithium and rare earth elements which are important pillars in the development of modern technologies and clean energy.
Mr. Mruma said this on July 11, 2026 while giving a briefing to the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Vice President (Union and Environment), Dr. Richard Stanslaus Muyungi, when he visited the Minerals Commission pavilion at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba).
He said that the demand for lithium minerals continues to increase rapidly worldwide due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles, mobile phones, laptops and other modern electronic devices.
He explained that in Tanzania, lithium minerals are mostly found in the areas of Dodoma and Ikungi, in Singida region.
Speaking on graphite, Mr. Mruma said Tanzania is the leading country in Africa for having large reserves of this mineral, which is an important raw material in the production of electric vehicle batteries as well as various other industrial uses.
He said Tanzania also has large reserves of rare earth elements in the East African Region, found in the Ngualla area in Songwe region and Wigu in Morogoro region.
After receiving the information, Dr. Richard Stanslaus Muyungi commended the Minerals Commission for continuing to educate the public about mineral resources and opportunities in the sector.
He said that education has a great contribution in increasing public awareness about the importance of mineral resources, investment opportunities and the role of the mining sector in promoting the economy and sustainable development of the Nation.
