Blue Economy will be sustainable and strengthened

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hon. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that Tanzania will continue to collaborate with international communities in protecting the marine environment, strengthening maritime security and developing a productive and beneficial Blue Economy for the citizens.

President Dr. Mwinyi said this today, June 18, 2026, at the PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort and Convention Centre, Mombasa, Kenya, during the closing ceremony of the 11th Our Ocean Conference, representing the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The conference, themed “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future,” has involved about 6,000 delegates from various countries around the world, including government leaders, international organizations, the private sector, experts, researchers and environmental stakeholders.

President Dr. Mwinyi said the meeting, which is the first to be held on the African continent, has enabled participants to exchange experiences, strengthen cooperation and develop joint strategies to address marine pollution, unsustainable fishing, climate change and maritime security challenges.

He explained that Tanzania has a coastline of approximately 1,424 kilometers and a Special Economic Zone of 223,000 square kilometers, thus making the Blue Economy sector an important pillar of development, employment and welfare of the citizens.

President Dr. Mwinyi said the Blue Economy contributes approximately 30 percent of Zanzibar’s GDP and provides employment to many citizens, especially women and youth engaged in fishing, seaweed farming, tourism and businesses that rely on marine resources.

President Dr. Mwinyi stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation, increasing investment, promoting technology transfer and building institutional capacity to fully utilize the opportunities of the Blue Economy for the benefit of the current and future generations.

Earlier, President Dr. Mwinyi joined the President of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, at a luncheon hosted at the hotel for leaders and guests who participated in the meeting.

President Dr. Mwinyi commended the Government and people of Kenya for making the meeting a success and stressed Tanzania’s commitment to continue collaborating with all stakeholders in developing an inclusive, safe and sustainable Blue Economy.
