Mbeto: President Mwinyi refuses to break the Constitution to remain in power

Zanzibar: Chama Cha Mapinduzi has commended the decision of the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwimyi, for overcoming the temptations of the partisans who began to pressure him to break the constitution and extend his term in power in Zanzibar.

CCM has said that it is a disgrace to the partisans and fans who began to persuade the leader to remain in power contrary to the CCM Constitution and the 1984 Zanzibar Constitution.

The commendation was given by the Secretary of the NEC Special Committee for Ideology, Propaganda and Training, Mr. Khamis Mbeto Khamis who said that this is the decision and position of CCM.

Mr. Mbeto said that in accordance with the Traditions and Culture of CCM and the requirements of the 1984 Zanzibar Constitution and the CCM Constitution, the President will remain in power for two ten-year terms and will not seek re-election.

He said the statements made by some of the party members on their own volition were false, as no President through CCM can get a chance to extend his term in office contrary to procedures.

“No matter what happens to the President in power if he has brought practical wonders in managing development, his constitutional term will remain the same ten years in office. Every President who completes those years will swear in others,” said Mr. Mbeto.

The Secretary, Mwenezi called the announcement by President Dr. Mwinyi refusing to remain at the State House by 2030, having no idea or plan to extend his term so that he can remain in office a shame for those who started to support him.

“Any gentleman leader respects the Constitution, both of the party and the country. Breaking promises and appointments or doing the opposite is a sign of the leader’s lack of dignity and civility”, he stressed.

Mr. Mbeto said that in Tanzania, especially within CCM, there are many members capable of carrying the burden of the Presidency and serving the country with patriotism, integrity and honesty, so there is no chance for one leader to remain in power forever.

“A term of more than five years was given to our Founders Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume. After them, there will be no one to extend the term of leadership either for Zanzibar or Tanzania”, explained the leader.
