📍 New York, United States: Tanzania’s world-renowned tanzanite gemstone captured international attention after Indian billionaire and philanthropist Sudha Reddy showcased an extraordinary Tanzanite necklace at the prestigious Met Gala 2026 in New York City.

The exclusive fashion event, held on Monday, 4 May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, provided a global platform for Tanzania’s rare mineral wealth as the Hyderabad-based entrepreneur appeared wearing a historic necklace valued at more than US$15 million (over TSh 39 billion).

At the centre of the masterpiece was a remarkable 550-carat tanzanite gemstone known as the “Queen of Mererani”, sourced from the famed Mererani Hills — the world’s only known source of tanzanite.

The dazzling appearance placed Tanzania firmly on the global luxury jewellery map, demonstrating the exceptional beauty, rarity and international value of its mineral resources.
