Internet users in the country increase to 58.9 million

The Communications and Information Technology sector has continued to grow rapidly in the country, with statistics showing a significant increase in users of various digital services.

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Mrs. Angellah Kairuki, stated this in Parliament in Dodoma, April 30, 2026
While presenting the Ministry’s revenue and expenditure estimates, she said registered telephone lines have increased from 90.4 million in March 2025 to 111.9 million in March 2026, equivalent to an increase of 23.8%, indicating an increase in the availability and use of communication services in the country.

She also said that internet users have increased from 49.3 million to 58.9 million during the same period, an increase of 19.5%, while users of mobile money services have increased from 66.5 million to 81.0 million, equivalent to 21.8%.

In terms of service providers, Ms. Kairuki said the number of communication infrastructure service providers has increased to 52 in March 2026 from 38 in March 2025, equivalent to an increase of 36.8%, while additional service providers (Application Services and Value-Added Services) reached 173 from 136, an increase of 27.2%.

Minister Kairuki said the growth is due to the Government’s significant investment in communication infrastructure, including the construction of the National Communication Network and the construction of communication towers, where 688 wards in the country have been provided with these services, benefiting approximately 8.5 million citizens.

He said the integration of the National Network in 86 districts has enhanced access to communication services and simplified the provision of social and economic services through digital means, as well as strengthening the Residential Address System that supports the identification and provision of services to citizens.

Minister Kairuki emphasized that these achievements are the result of the implementation of the Government’s vision to strengthen the digital economy and improve access to services for citizens in the country.
