Lake region to get reliable electricity

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has conducted an inspection visit to the Mpomvu Electricity Receiving and Cooling Station located in Geita region on March 15, 2026, as part of monitoring the implementation of strategic energy projects aimed at enhancing access to electricity in the country.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson of the Committee, Mrs. Subira Mgallu, said the visit aimed to review the progress of energy projects as well as ensuring that investments made by the Government bring the intended results to the citizens.

“As the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, we have a responsibility to supervise the Ministry of Energy to ensure that it fully implements its responsibilities. We are satisfied with the investment made in this station which has a significant contribution to ensuring reliable access to electricity for the citizens and economic activities,” said Mrs. Mgallu.

He added that the station has the capacity to receive and distribute about 90 megawatts, while efforts are ongoing to improve the electricity distribution infrastructure including a plan to add a special line for the Geita Gold Mine (GGM).

“The electricity demand of the GGM mine is expected to reach about 70 megawatts by 2035 from the 36 megawatts currently used, so it is important to continue strengthening the electricity distribution infrastructure to meet these needs”, he added

Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Salome Makamba said the Government is continuing to strengthen the electricity infrastructure in Geita Region due to the rapid growth of economic and social activities especially in the mining sector.

“This station has a major contribution to improving access to electricity in Geita Region and neighboring areas including Biharamulo and Ngara in Kagera Region, Sengerema in Mwanza Region and Kakonko in Kigoma Region”, said Mrs. Salome.

The Deputy Minister of Energy added that the Mpomvu Power Station has cost about 50 billion shillings, an investment that has increased the power supply capacity in the rapidly growing economic region where the current electricity demand has reached 73.64 Megawatts.

Previously, Geita Region was receiving electricity from Shinyanga Region with a capacity of only about 4 megawatts, a level that did not meet the increasing electricity demand due to economic activities, especially mining.

The Mpomvu Power Receiving and Cooling Station began construction in 2019 and was completed in 2020, before being officially launched in 2022 by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
