Sweeden congratulates TANESCO for strengthening the availability of electricity in Tanzania

The Ambassador of Sweden in the country, Charlotta Macias, has congratulated the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) for strengthening the electricity production projects, saying that this step has a great contribution in improving the availability of reliable electricity in the country.

“The strengthening of these power generation projects has increased the ability of TANESCO to provide reliable service to the people, a situation that will reduce the challenge of power outages and stimulate economic development,” said Ambassador Macias.

Ambassador Macias said on January 28, 2026, immediately after making a working visit to the Ubungo II Natural Gas Power Generation Center located in Dar es Salaam, in line with his message emphasizing that Sweden will continue to strengthen its strategic cooperation with Tanzania, especially in the Energy Sector.

“Sweden will continue to cooperate closely with the Government of Tanzania and TANESCO in the implementation of electricity projects aimed at increasing production and strengthening infrastructure for the benefit of the people,” emphasized Ambassador Macias.

Speaking on behalf of the Deputy Executive Director of Electricity Production TANESCO, Director of Electricity Generating Stations using Oil and Gas, Engineer Marco Zacharia, said the visit has given them the opportunity to show the implementation of projects carried out in collaboration between TANESCO and Siemens Company of Sweden.

“This visit has shown the positive results of our cooperation with Swedish companies in strengthening electricity production, where the Ubungo II station continues to work with great efficiency,” said the engineer. Marco.

Explaining the current state of the Center’s production, he said the three production plants from Sweden used in the Center, each with the capacity to produce 43 Megawatts, are working well and contribute a total of 129 megawatts to the National Electricity Grid.

He said that this situation contributes to the existence of a surplus of electricity in the country and added that the Agency is also continuing with efforts to strengthen the transportation and distribution infrastructure to ensure that electricity reaches the people effectively.

The Ubungo II Natural Gas Power Plant project is 100 percent funded by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania at a cost of approximately 129 million US dollars, and contributes 129 megawatts equal to 7 percent of electricity in the National Grid.
