Mineral markets enhance transparency, control smuggling

📍Dodoma: The Minerals Commission has said the establishment of mineral markets and mineral purchasing centers in the country has increased transparency in the mineral trade and helped control the smuggling of the resource, a move that contributed to increasing Government revenue.

Speaking at the ongoing Public Service Week Exhibition at Chinangali grounds in Dodoma, June 18, 2026, a Minerals Commission Officer from the Directorate of Mineral Inspection and Trade, Mr. Ibrahim Akyoo said the system has enabled miners and traders to sell minerals through official channels and thus strengthen the management of the sector.

He said that currently in the country there are 44 mineral markets and 120 mineral purchasing centers that facilitate the mineral trade and ensure that the Government receives adequate revenue from these resources.

Mr. Akyoo said that among the responsibilities of the Directorate of Minerals Inspection and Trade are to oversee the mineral trade in the country, ensure that Tanzanians’ participation in the sector increases, control mineral smuggling, conduct financial and tax audits as well as provide laboratory services to stakeholders in the sector.

He said that through the exhibitions, the Minerals Commission continues to educate citizens and stakeholders about the various opportunities available in the mineral sector, including mineral trading, mining, value addition, service provision and other activities in the sector’s value chain.

He said that these measures continue to make the mineral sector among the important sectors that contribute to economic growth and national development.
