Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr. Albert Chalamila, has urged the Measurement Agency (WMA) to continue providing education to traders to avoid invalid measurements as well as to take appropriate legal steps to protect the rights of consumers against invalid measurements.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam at an event marking World Measurement Day held at Kariakoo Market aimed at eradicating invalid measurements, RC Chalamila said these celebrations are of great importance to ensure that the community gains an understanding of accurate measurements.
He said this will help avoid the misuse of Vipomo where he stressed the importance of the measurement agency collaborating well with traders so that this goal can be achieved by effectively managing the policy on weighing scales, selling fuel and other similar products.
Mr. Chalamila has urged the measurement agency to work in collaboration with other authorities including the Revenue Authority of Tanzania (TRA), the Standards Agency (TBS) and the Competition Commission to ensure that together they achieve the goal of avoiding the scourge of invalid measurements.
Mr. Chalamila on behalf of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu has distributed various scales for free which will be used in the markets of the Region.
He has also urged traders to realize that ignoring the use of measurements, when selling your business is also a great sin and an abomination to God and an injustice that even all religious books have condemned, so he has urged traders to act fairly by avoiding invalid measurements.
Also, Mr. Chalamila has presented gifts and awards to the Kisutu Market for emerging as a winner in the correct use of measurements.
He has used the opportunity to urge traders and Tanzanians in general to continue to maintain peace in the country, work hard and pay due taxes to support the Government’s efforts to strengthen essential social services
The Ilala District Commissioner, Mr. Edward Mpogolo said that when measurement is given equitably, justice is achieved and that the Government has established various agencies to administer justice including the measurement agency and that the Government’s mission is to ensure that all measurements are given fairly.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Tanzania Measurement Agency, Mr. Francis Owelro, said measurements are essential in daily business activities, so it is important for traders to consider the use of accurate measurements.
Finally, World Measurement Day is celebrated every year on May 20th and this year the celebration of the day in Tanzania is expected to be held in Dodoma Region with the theme “Measurement Science Builds Trust in Policy Making”.
