Journalists trained on the importance of Artificial Intelligence in journalism

Tech & Media Convergence (TMC) conducted a three-day training for journalists, editors, and newsroom leaders from October 27 to 29, 2026, in Dar es Salaam. The training aimed to build their capacity to utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology while adhering to legal requirements, ethical standards, and accountability in news writing and editing.

On the first day, participants discussed the legal and policy frameworks surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence in Tanzania and Kenya.

These discussions were led by Advocate Robert Sylivester Majige, TMC’s Lead for Policy and Civic Technologies.

Advocate Majige also facilitated a discussion on how to translate the foundational principles of AI governance into actionable rules and policies, tailored to the specific needs and responsibilities of newsrooms.

On the second day, Dastan Kamanzi, Executive Director of the Tanzania Media Foundation (TMF), led a session on the technical measures required to ensure the safe and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence.

Participants also shared their experiences and discussed key considerations for developing policies regarding the use of this technology. The training also involved Anuar Said, a trainer and consultant for TMC, who facilitated discussions on sharing experiences, while Janet John Kahindi, TMC’s Policy and Program Coordinator, oversaw the organization of group activities and the drafting of policy documents.

On the final day of the training, October 29, the journalists reviewed a draft policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and provided recommendations for its improvement to better align with the practical needs of newsrooms.

These recommendations addressed issues such as the accuracy of information, journalistic ethics, editorial independence, the protection of personal data, and accountability.

The training concluded with the objective of helping media organizations establish clear guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence. Through this initiative, TMC continues to promote the responsible use of such technology, safeguard journalistic integrity, and foster public trust in the media within the digital landscape.
