Public Urged to Take Precautions Against Stroke

In observance of World Stroke Day, the public is being urged to manage risk factors for stroke—such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease—to reduce the likelihood of experiencing a stroke, which can lead to permanent disability.

Dr. Brighton Mushengezi, a specialist in brain and nervous system disorders (neurologist) at Muhimbili National Hospital–Mloganzila, explained that a stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked or ruptures, thereby impairing brain function.

He noted that other risk factors include smoking and advanced age, while emphasizing the importance of managing chronic conditions, engaging in regular physical exercise, and maintaining a healthy diet to lower the risk of developing the condition.

Citing 2025 statistics from the World Stroke Organization, he stated that approximately 12 million people suffer a stroke each year, and that one in four people aged 25 and older is at risk of experiencing a stroke at some point in their lifetime.

Dr. Mushengezi added that Muhimbili National Hospital–Mloganzila admits approximately five to seven patients with stroke each day. He stated that this situation highlights the importance of continuing to educate the public about the risk factors and symptoms of the condition—which include facial drooping on one side, sudden weakness in an arm or leg, and difficulty speaking clearly.

He urged individuals who notice these symptoms to seek emergency medical care at the hospital immediately, as any delay in treatment can exacerbate the effects of the condition.

He explained that stroke patients arriving at the hospital undergo an assessment to determine the type of stroke and the extent of its impact, after which they receive appropriate treatment.

He further encouraged the public to utilize the services of the hospital’s Neurology Clinic—available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays—to access professional advice and specialized care.
