The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has stated that Zanzibar aims to further strengthen its cooperation with South Korea—particularly in the sectors of tourism, the blue economy, renewable energy, industrial development, technology, and education—by drawing upon that nation’s experience and successes.
President Dr. Mwinyi made these remarks on October 27, 2026, in the city of Yeosu, South Korea, at the start of a working visit that includes various meetings and tours focused on investment, technology, the blue economy, and industrial development.
During the visit, President Dr. Mwinyi held discussions with the Mayor of Yeosu, H.E. Seo Young-hak, regarding potential areas of cooperation between Zanzibar and Yeosu.
He noted that these areas include tourism and culture; the blue economy; aquaculture and the production of marine products; renewable energy and island infrastructure; industry and investment; as well as education and training.
Regarding the blue economy, President Dr. Mwinyi highlighted the importance of Zanzibar benefiting from Korea’s expertise in modern fishing, aquaculture, cold-chain storage systems, and seaweed processing, with the aim of adding value, expanding markets, and increasing the incomes of farmers and fishers.
He expressed an interest in further collaboration regarding renewable energy—including solar and wind power—as well as technology and infrastructure capable of withstanding the challenges posed by climate change.
Regarding industry and investment, President Dr. Mwinyi noted that Zanzibar could learn from Yeosu’s experience in industrial development, technical skills, and the application of technology, while inviting businesspeople and investors to explore the opportunities available in Zanzibar.
He mentioned that Zanzibar is already benefiting from cooperation with South Korea through various initiatives, such as scholarships and educational projects, while emphasizing the need to extend this partnership into other areas of development.
President Dr. Mwinyi also underscored the importance of fostering collaboration on the implementation of projects such as the Binguni Referral Hospital and the Zanzibar International Convention and Exhibition Centre—strategic projects that stand to benefit from cooperation with South Korea.
President Dr. Mwinyi also visited the POSCO company in Gwangyang, which specializes in steel production. There, he observed the application of technology in industrial manufacturing, as well as efforts to develop industries that prioritize environmental conservation.
He further visited K-Food in Goheung-gun—a company engaged in the production and processing of seaweed products—where he witnessed the use of technology in seaweed processing, value addition, and market expansion; these are key areas for enhancing the benefits of this crop for farmers in Zanzibar.
President Dr. Mwinyi also visited the 2026 World Island Exhibition in Yeosu, South Korea, where he explored various innovations, products, and experiences showcased by participants from different nations.
