Dar es Salaam: The Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) has said it has prepared to deal with the effects of El Niño rains by strengthening infrastructure, preparing emergency teams and taking precautions in power generation dams.
Speaking during the TBC Aridhio program, September 17, 2026, TANESCO’s Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the organization has assessed its infrastructure and identified vulnerable areas.
“We have held a meeting with the Meteorological Authority and assessed our infrastructure, so we are aware of the vulnerable areas and have started taking action,” said Mr. Twange
He said that preparations have also begun in various areas, including Dar es Salaam, by strengthening electricity poles that were seen to be in a state of fatigue.
“Like Dar es Salaam, we have started, to repair tree poles that show signs of fatigue so that we can put up new poles,” added Mr. Twange.
In addition, he said TANESCO has prepared emergency teams to handle customer challenges if they arise during the rains.
“We have prepared our emergency teams in the sense of our “emergency” teams in the sense of dealing with our customers when they call us,” he confirmed.
In terms of hydroelectric dams, he said TANESCO is monitoring the water situation in its dams, while recognizing the possibility of El Niño causing a significant increase in water.
“We have another area for our hydroelectric power stations. Dams like Mwalimu Nyerere, Mtera, Kidatu, Kihansi. Water for us is an important service and we appreciate it because we have enough water to generate electricity,” he said.
However, he said that excessive water can also be harmful to citizens living near these dams, so TANESCO has started providing education and taking precautions.
“But due to El Niño we may get more water than usual.
And that water can cause harm to neighbors who live around our dams,” he added
“We have already started working in collaboration with the leaders of those areas to educate the public but it is up to us to take precautions so that when the water is high, it does not cause harm to neighbors and citizens near our hydroelectric dams,” added Twange.
TANESCO has said it will continue to take precautions and strengthen its preparedness to deal with the effects of El Niño, while citizens are encouraged to cooperate with the organization by providing early information and paying attention to electricity safety.
