President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hon. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has asked the graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to use their education, knowledge and creativity to solve society’s challenges, improve people’s lives and contribute to sustainable development.
Speaking as an Official Guest at the 63rd Graduation of IIT Madras, held on July 17, 2026, in Chennai, India, President Dr. Mwinyi has said that education is the basis for building a nation, strengthening society and preparing a generation with knowledge, courage and the ability to bring about positive change.
He said the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar continues to invest in higher education, science, technology and creativity as important pillars for the implementation of the National Development Vision and Blue Economy Agenda.
President Dr. Mwinyi said the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus has opened a new page of educational cooperation between Tanzania and India, while providing opportunities for young Africans to get international level education and strengthen research, creativity and entrepreneurship.
In that event, President Dr. Mwinyi has participated in awarding graduates of various levels of higher education, including undergraduate and doctoral degrees (PhD). In addition, he was presented with a Special Award from IIT Madras in recognition of his contribution to the establishment and development of the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus.
The graduation also coincided with the launch of the construction project for the new permanent campus of IIT Madras Zanzibar, a step expected to further strengthen the position of Zanzibar as a center of education, research and technology in the East African region.
The event was attended by the Minister of Education and Practical Training Zanzibar, Hon. Lela Mohamed Mussa, Director of IIT Madras, Professor V. Kamakoti, Ambassador of Tanzania in India, Hon. Anisa Kapufi Mbega, Ambassador of India in Tanzania, Hon. Bishwadip Dey, along with various Leaders, Lecturers, Parents and Families of Graduates.
