The President of Zanzibar and the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, who is also the Trustee of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation, Hon. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, said the best way to honor the legacy of late President Benjamin William Mkapa is to continue investing in leadership, strengthening health systems and empowering young people to be the architects of Africa’s future.
President Dr. Mwinyi said this, on July 16, 2026, at the Fourth Forum to Honor Mkapa’s Heritage and the 20th Anniversary of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation, held at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Center (JNICC), in Dar es Salaam.
He said the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation has continued to be an important partner of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar in strengthening health systems, developing the human resources of the health sector and improving basic health services for citizens.
In that event, President Dr. Mwinyi was awarded a Special Award to recognize his contribution to the development of the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation, handed over by the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi.
President Dr. Mwinyi entrusted Hon. Dr. Nhimbi High Leadership Award in Health Reform on behalf of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Samia Solution Hassan.
The event was attended by the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi, Mama Anna Mkapa, Leaders of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ambassadors, Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region, Prof. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, representatives of international institutions, development stakeholders, health professionals and various guests are invited.
