SMZ and Singapore to strengthen cooperation in economy, trade and diplomacy

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hon. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that Zanzibar intends to open a new page in relations and cooperation with the Republic of Singapore in the fields of economy, trade and investment diplomacy.

President Dr. Mwinyi said this, on June 10, 2026, when he spoke to the President of the Republic of Singapore, Hon. Tharman Shanmugaratnam who is in Tanzania for a three-day visit. The talks were held at the Zanzibar State House.

President Dr. Mwinyi said that the long-standing relationship between the friendly countries should now be directed towards exploring new areas of economic cooperation that will bring more benefits to both parties.

He said Zanzibar expects to strengthen the cooperation in various areas, including exchanging experience, skills, education, technology, new knowledge, building workforce capacity and working together in strategic sectors of trade and investment.

President Dr. Mwinyi assured Singapore that Zanzibar will continue to maintain the brotherly relationship that exists between the two sides, which he described as an important tool to bring together the people of Zanzibar and Singapore.

President Dr. Mwinyi has invited Singaporean companies, investors and businessmen to invest in Zanzibar in the key sectors of the blue economy and tourism.

Speaking about the blue economy sector, President Dr. Mwinyi said that the sector has many investment opportunities, where Zanzibar needs serious investors in the areas of oil and natural gas, deep sea fishing and marine product processing.

He said that previous studies have shown the existence of energy indicators in some areas of Zanzibar, a situation that opens up new investment opportunities in this strategically important area.

Regarding seaweed farming, President Dr. Mwinyi said that the crop has carried many citizens who are engaged in this agriculture so Zanzibar needs investment in value-added industries to get rid of the system of transporting seaweed as raw materials.

Speaking about the energy sector, President Dr. Mwinyi said that electricity is another important area that Zanzibar needs investors, due to the growth of the tourism sector, the increase in hotels and large investment projects.

President Dr. Mwinyi has also urged Singapore to support Zanzibar in its efforts to transform technology and digital systems, including the provision of digital services in public institutions, building the capacity of executives and developing training opportunities for Zanzibari in Singapore.

President Dr. Mwinyi has described President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s visit to Zanzibar as an example of the beginning of a new phase of relations and cooperation, as well as opening up new development opportunities for the benefit of both parties.

In turn, the President of Singapore, Hon. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, said that his country intends to further strengthen cooperation with Zanzibar and support its efforts to bring about development.
