The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hon. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar will continue to support the efforts of the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) in the provision of education, due to its significant contribution to national development and the welfare of the people.
President Dr. Mwinyi said this, on June 10, 2026, when he met with a delegation from the Open University of Tanzania that arrived at the State House in Zanzibar, led by the Dean of the University and Retired Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Mizengo Peter Pinda.
President Dr. Mwinyi has commended OUT’s contribution in providing higher education opportunities to many citizens through the open and distance education system which has enabled people of various cadres to continue their studies without affecting their daily responsibilities.
President Dr. Mwinyi has promised to continue collaborating with OUT to strengthen the provision of educational services in Zanzibar and ensure that citizens have more opportunities to develop themselves academically.
President Dr. Mwinyi also said that the Government will work on the request for land for the construction of a large educational coordination center in Unguja.
He commended the decision of the University to establish an educational coordination center on Pemba Island and promised to work on the request for financial contribution for the construction of the center.
President Dr. Mwinyi emphasized the importance of continuing the great work being done by the Open University of Tanzania in both parts of the United Republic of Tanzania, explaining that education is an important foundation for social and economic development.
The Chancellor of the Open University of Tanzania, Mr. Mizengo Peter Pinda said that the University has plans to build permanent coordination centers in Zanzibar to reduce the cost of renting buildings and enable it to have a permanent identity through its own infrastructure.
