By: Happiness Katabazi: The late BONIFACE MAKENE who has died in the United States was a correspondent for the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mohamed Gharib Bilal 2010-2015, a correspondent for the Mwananchi newspaper and the Mtanzania newspaper.
The death of my countryman Makene hurt me. I started reporting news for the Mwananchi newspaper in the early 2000s.
Mr. Makene and the photographer, Mr. Sufuani Maphoto, Mr. Seif Maalim and I were part of a team of journalists who traveled around the country in the General Election campaigns with the former CCM candidate in 2010, Dr. Gharib Bilal.
When Mr. Makene was studying at UDSM, he would come to the Mwananchi newspaper newsroom to write news and he found me already started my journalism career.
Also, when my late Editor Dany Mwakitereko was planning for me to go report on the UDSM student strikes, I used to meet him in the chaos between the FFU riot police and the protesting UDSM students.
