Preserve historical sites – President of Zanzibar

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that the Government has prioritized the enhancement and preservation of historical sites considering their importance in the economy and cultural preservation of Zanzibar.

President, Dr. Mwinyi said this on April 04, 2026 when he met with the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Tanzania, Mrs. Marjo Crompvoet who arrived at the State House in Zanzibar for special talks.

Commenting on the move, President Dr. Mwinyi explained that the ongoing major renovation of the Majestic Cinema building in Vuga is being carried out under the cooperation between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the Government of Japan, with the aim of retaining it in its original appearance and making it sustainable.

He added that its completion will encourage the holding of various concerts in the building.

In addition, President Dr. Mwinyi explained that the Government has sustainable plans to preserve important buildings with a long history, which are an important tool in promoting Zanzibar and strengthening the tourism sector, as many visitors visit these areas when they come to the country.

President Dr. Mwinyi thanked the Netherlands for strengthening relations and cooperation with Tanzania, including Zanzibar, in various fields as well as the assistance provided in developing development projects in the country.

In addition, he has invited investors from the Netherlands to come and invest in the country, especially in the priority sectors of tourism and the blue economy in general.

He said that the move will stimulate an increase in tourists from the country and noted that Zanzibar still needs more investors in the industrial, fishing and agricultural sectors.

And the Dutch Ambassador, Mrs. Marjo Crompvoet, has assured Zanzibar of continuing to strengthen relations and cooperation as well as assistance in various sectors.

He expressed satisfaction with the great steps of economic development achieved by Zanzibar, including the construction of various infrastructures, while promising an increase in investors from the country to come and invest in Zanzibar.

At the same time, President Dr. Mwinyi met with the Slovak Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr. Ivan Lančarič, who arrived at the State House to introduce himself, accompanied by the Slovak Deputy Ambassador whose official base will be in Zanzibar, Mr. Mustafa Khataw.

During the talks, President Dr. Mwinyi assured Slovakia that Zanzibar is ready to open doors of cooperation and work with the country in various economic areas, investment, trade and tourism, as well as advising it to promote Zanzibar in the country’s tourism market.

Ambassador Ivan Lančarič said that the country expects to open its embassy in Tanzania early June this year, a move that will go hand in hand with the opening of its embassy’s sub-office in Zanzibar with the aim of developing cooperation.

He explained that Slovakia has made significant progress in the industrial economy, automotive manufacturing technology and trade and investment.
