SMZ to increase the value of seaweed crop

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that the Government is continuing with various strategies to ensure that seaweed farming is value added to benefit the farmers of the crop.

President Dr. Mwinyi said this on March 30, 2026, when he met with the Chairman of the TSC Purple Limited Company of India, Dr. Stefan Kraan, along with his delegation who arrived at the State House, Zanzibar.

During the conversation, President Dr. Mwinyi explained to the delegation that the Government’s goal is to increase seaweed production, ensure access to reliable markets and good prices for seaweed farmers.

President Dr. Mwinyi has advised the TSC Purple Limited Company to establish a procedure for purchasing seaweed raw directly from farmers, a step that will help reduce production costs and increase productivity for farmers.

The Chairman of the TSC Purple Limited Company, Dr. Stefan Kraan, said the company is continuing with the installation of machinery at the seaweed processing plant in Chamanangwe where the work is expected to be completed in June 2026 and production will officially begin in September 2026.

He said the investment will bring a major revolution in the seaweed sector in Zanzibar, including the production of various products such as fertilizers, animal feed and medicines.

Similarly, Dr. Kraan has informed President Dr. Mwinyi that the company expects to organize a large meeting of seaweed farming stakeholders to be held in Tanzania from June 16 – 19, 2026 and to conduct a special visit to seaweed production areas in Zanzibar with the aim of identifying new opportunities to develop the sector.
