Bodaboda and Bajaj drivers are reminded to walk with receipts for the luggage they carry

The manager of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), CPA Paul Walalaze has advised bodaboda, taxi and car drivers in the country to make sure they carry receipts when they transport goods to avoid customs sharia challenges.

The call was made on March 28, 2026 in Dar es Salaam while speaking at an award ceremony for women workers and self-employed in the transportation sector where he emphasized the importance of having valid documents for the cargo they transport.

CPA Walalaze has warned that, according to customs laws, if someone transports undocumented or untaxed cargo, legal action can be taken against the driver, the transport vehicle as well as the owner.

“Someone can tell you to take a load from one place to another, but make sure you satisfy yourself that there are documents. Even if it is by phone, ask him to send you a receipt”, insisted Manager Walalaze.

He said it is their responsibility to be ambassadors of compliance with the law by ensuring that the cargo they carry has valid documents to facilitate their transportation activities.

He recently said the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan received the opinions of various stakeholders regarding tax improvements, a move that aims to create an environment for Tanzanians to be part of the official sector.

He explained that TRA has been given the responsibility to ensure that it collects income for the development of the nation, where the income is divided into two groups which are tax and non-tax income.

He said the tax revenue has been divided into various parts, including taxes on imports from countries like China and Dubai, which are managed by the Customs Department.
