The Director of Taxpayer Education and Communication of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Mr. Richard Kayombo accompanied by the TRA Education and Communication Officer for Kagera Region, Mr. Ruekaza Rwegoshora have provided education on the effects of smuggling through radio KDCU Fm located in Kayanga Karagwe in Kagera Region.
The education was provided on March 16, 2026 to citizens where the Director of Education and Communication Mr. Kayombo said that smuggling has a major impact on society and the nation as a whole, so every citizen should be patriotic and reject smuggling with all their might.
Mr. Kayombo said that smuggling can endanger health, security, bring unfair competition and deprive the government of revenue, thus delaying the development of the country.
“Smuggling has a major impact as it can endanger health, security, bring unfair competition and deprive the government of revenue”, said Mr. Kayombo.
TRA Education and Communication Officer for Kagera Region, Mr. Ruekaza Rwegoshora said that anyone caught smuggling will be subject to strict legal action including confiscating the vehicle used to transport the contraband, fines, imprisonment or both, thus encouraging traders and citizens in general to use official channels and follow all customs procedures to import and export goods.
Citizens have been asked to provide information via phone number 0784 210 209 if they see goods being smuggled or tax evasion and a reward of 3% of the tax collected there will be given to those who provide information.
