📍Doha, Qatar: In implementing the promise to restore the value and status of Tanzanite gemstones, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has put in place a strong strategy to promote Tanzanite minerals in Qatar to expand its market reach and attract investment.
This was stated on February 25, 2026 by the Minister of Minerals, His Excellency Anthony Mavunde (Mb) when he visited the Tanzanian Embassy in Qatar and held talks with embassy staff.
“The Tanzanite market in recent years has seemed to decline slightly and that is why even the price has dropped. The President has heard the cries of Tanzanite miners and traders and instructed the Ministry of Minerals to ensure that we restore the status of these minerals worldwide so that they are beneficial to our Nation.
“The Ministry is implementing the instructions of His Excellency. President. We will ensure that we continue to promote and reach various markets around the world and tell them that Tanzanite comes from Tanzania and is available in abundance”, explained Mr. Mavunde.
Minister Mavunde indicated that the Government’s strategy is important and has come at the right time as we have seen that some countries in the world do not know whether Tanzanite minerals come from Tanzania, which leads to us losing a market that would also help promote tourism in the country.
Likewise, Mr. Mavunde noted that Tanzania is blessed with various types of minerals including gemstones, but Tanzanite is unique and is the identity of our Nation as these minerals are not found anywhere else in the world other than Tanzania, we must be proud of them while promoting and protecting the unique characteristic we have been blessed with these minerals.
Advising on the best way to reach many stakeholders and explain investment opportunities in Tanzania, Minister Mavunde has agreed to coordinate with the Embassy to organize the participation of gemstone traders from Tanzania in the mineral exhibition to be held in April, Doha-Qatar.
Earlier, welcoming the Minister in Qatar, His Excellency Habibu Awesi Mohamed, Tanzanian Ambassador to Qatar, thanked him for visiting Qatar and emphasized that there are many opportunities in the mining sector which, if opened, will bring benefits and productivity to our nation and contribute to economic growth.
