Musoma Port set to undergo renovation

The Minister of Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, on February 23, 2026 during his visit to the Lake Region, visited Musoma Port and stressed that the Government is going to renovate it in order to continue opening up economic opportunities in the Mara Region.

He said the sixth phase Government under the President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan is continuing with the renovation and improvements of all the Great Lakes Ports including Lake Nyasa, Tanganyika and Lake Victoria with the aim of strengthening water transport in the country and increasing the income of the citizens and the relevant Regions in parallel with opening up the regional economy.

Speaking after visiting Musoma Port, Mara Region, Minister Mbarawa said Lake Victoria on the Mara Region side is the only area that borders the two countries of Uganda and Kenya, so there is great importance in making improvements to the Musoma Port in order to open up the Mara Region and open up the country to the Region.

He explained that the Government has continued to invest in Port infrastructure, construction and renovation of ships to enhance water transport in all the Great Lakes in the country with the aim of connecting Tanzania with neighboring countries.

Speaking on behalf of the Region, the Mara Regional Commissioner, Colonel Alfredi Mtambi, said that Musoma Port is strategic, where its improvements will make Musoma town a major hub for trade, fishing and regional tourism.

Musoma Urban MP, Mr. Mgore Miraji, thanked the Government for continuing to invest in water transport infrastructure in the country, noting that the improvements to be made at Musoma Port, its citizens and those in neighboring areas will directly benefit through increased economic activities and employment opportunities.

The visit by the Minister of Transport is part of the Government’s strategy to strengthen the Transport Sector by improving the inland ports of the Great Lakes to increase transportation efficiency and stimulate economic development in all the Great Lakes in the country.
