The Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, on February 12, 2026, inspected and laid the foundation stone for the construction of a 60 MVA Mkatata Tanga power receiving and cooling station and the construction of a 33 kilovolt power transmission line.
Laying the foundation stone for the project, Dr. Mwigulu said that the implementation of the project is an effort by His Excellency the President of the United Republic of Tanzania to ensure that citizens have access to reliable electricity.
“I urge the Ministry of Energy to ensure the speed of completion of the project and that it is completed on time”, said the Prime Minister.
In another step, he has instructed the Ministry of Energy to communicate with the Ministry of Finance to finalize the payment of compensation to citizens of approximately one billion shillings.
The construction of the project is 44 billion shillings and involves the construction of two receiving, cooling and distributing stations with a capacity of 60 MVA, each with a capacity of 30 MVA and the construction of a 33 kV transmission line from the Mkata station to Msisi.
The Minister of Energy, Mr. Deogratius Ndejembi, has thanked the President for facilitating the availability of funds that will be used in the implementation of the project.
“The implementation of this project is going to eliminate electricity challenges in Handeni and Kilindi Districts which receive electricity from Tanga city which is a long distance”, said Mr. Ndejembi.
He explained that through the new infrastructure, electricity will be transported from Mkata to Msisi for a distance of 45 kilometers, a step that will increase the distribution capacity and strengthen services in those areas.
The completion of the electricity service in Handeni and Kilindi Districts will stimulate the growth of economic and social activities.
