The Chief Specialist in Diabetes and Hormone Diseases at Muhimbili National Hospital–Mloganzila, Dr. Salama Asaa Ali, said that hormonal changes in women affect almost all body systems, a condition that can cause various health challenges if not detected and treated early.
Speaking about the effects of hormonal changes in women, Dr. Salama said that the initial symptoms of abnormal hormonal changes in women occur more in the menstrual system where they can experience unusually heavy or light menstruation, complete absence of menstruation (Amenorrhea), failure to conceive or frequent miscarriages, which are indicators of hormonal problems.
He said that these changes also affect the skin and hair, where some women experience acne on the face, changes in skin color as well as hair loss.
In terms of long-term effects, Dr. Salama said that bones and heart are more affected especially in women who are approaching or have undergone menopause due to a decrease in the level of the hormone estrogen that protects bone and heart health, thus increasing the risk of bones becoming weak and breaking easily as well as getting high blood pressure.
“Hormonal changes also affect emotional states and marital relationships, where some women experience abnormal anger, depression and vaginal dryness that can affect sexual life”, said Dr. Salama
He noted that if these challenges are not treated in time, they can cause psychological and social harm to the woman and the family in general.
Dr. Salama has encouraged women to take steps to protect themselves against hormonal challenges by changing their lifestyle including exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, avoiding processed foods and foods high in sugar as well as managing stress.
