Tanzania, Morocco, Ethiopia Lead African Tourism

The United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism Q1, 2025) report, containing global tourism statistics up to May this year, has shown that Tanzania has continued to perform well in tourism in Africa and the world with figures for the first quarter of this year in both, an increase in tourists and income compared to 2019 before the pandemic.

Increase in Tourists in the World and Africa,

Tanzania has entered the top three African countries leading in the increase in the number of tourists compared to 2019 by obtaining an increase in tourists by 50 percent, preceded by Morocco (60 percent) and Ethiopia (52 percent).

As a result, Tanzania is among the top 20 countries in the world for the largest increase in tourists compared to 2019, preceded by countries such as Brazil, Albania, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Global Revenue Growth and Africa,

In this section for Africa, the report shows that Tanzania has led by increasing the contribution or revenue of the sector by 66 percent compared to 2019, making it the first in Africa (followed by Tunisia 62% and Morocco 49%).

With these figures, Tanzania is the 12th country in the world, on the same list as countries like Norway, Brazil, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Moldova, etc.

What Happened in Tanzania?

When asked about these achievements, the Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Chairman of the Presidential Committee for Promoting Tanzania, Dr. Hassani Abbasi, said while in Paris, France on business: “They are strategies. We would not have achieved these successes by sitting in the office doing many processes and analyzing documents.”

“Our President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has left the office and gone to the “field” to make films for the Royal Tour and Amazing Tanzania, our Ministry leaders, our ambassadors around the world, our institutions and stakeholders have gone out to promote the country either in person or by participating in major exhibitions. Those seeds have brought this harvest.

“For us, the vision for moving forward is to think of more strategies including through promoting ourselves in the world’s biggest leagues. If you look at the report, you will see that Qatar and Saudi Arabia are at the top, which is a result of strategies such as sports and concerts that are monitored by many countries,” said Dr. Abbasi.

When asked how these results match reality? He replies, First of all, our country is flooded with tourists everywhere as we speak. But if you look at our statistics, they are consistent with those of UN Tourism.

There is no decrease.

Yesterday’s BoT statement shows that this sector has brought 3.92 billion dollars to the economy, making it the number one foreign exchange earner.

Revenue collections for all major tourism institutions Tanapa, TFS, Tawa and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority have reached levels that have never been seen since their inception.

“For example, in major markets, we have advertised ourselves a lot, you will see the increase in tourists coming to the United States is 41%, China and India today, tourists from China have increased by 108 percent and from India it is 75 percent.

We see tourists and income increasing in all corners. I repeat again and hold fast to this word STRATEGIES.”
