‘Tanzania now has enough electricity’ – Dr. Biteko

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, has said that Tanzania has enough electricity, which is due to the completion of major power generation projects including the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) which alone produces 2,115 Megawatts.

The Deputy Prime Minister said this on July 10, 2025 during his visit to inspect the progress of natural gas power generation projects at Kinyerezi I, Kinyerezi I Extension and Kinyerezi II stations.

He said that despite the great work being done by TANESCO, there are some areas that have had challenges in accessing electricity but so far they have continued to improve.

Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Biteko has explained that in order to ensure access to electricity is in line with the needs of the increasing population, TANESCO expects to increase electricity production at the Kinyerezi III Station from the previous plan of 600 megawatts to the current plan of 1000 megawatts.

“I want to say before you my brothers, Hon. President Samia is the Leader of making all this a success, he has made major investments in the Energy Sector and that is why in the last budget this Ministry has received 2.3 Trillion Shillings, he wants the citizens to have reliable electricity”, said Dr. Biteko.

Also, Dr. Bitteko has commended TANESCO for the major improvements that are being made to serve customers, especially for their urgency in dealing with any electricity emergencies that arise.

“There are major improvements that have been made to serve the citizens, I see great efforts being made, you have been urgent in addressing electricity challenges but I also commend you for strengthening the Call Center, now the citizens are served at no cost”, said Dr. Biteko.

Dr. Biteko has visited the Kinyerezi Natural Gas Receiving Center to inspect the gas transportation infrastructure and urged them to increase gas production to help meet the increased demand for electricity.

During the visit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Biteko was accompanied by various leaders including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, Ilala District Commissioner, Mr. Edward Mpogolo and TANESCO Executive Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange.
