Government sets ambitious plans to provide electricity to sub-districts

Deputy Minister of Energy, Ms. Judith Kapinga, has said that the Government through the Rural Energy Agency (REA) is implementing electricity projects in sub-districts by considering additional criteria including the size of the sub-districts, the size of the State as well as economic and social needs.

She said the goal of setting such criteria is to ensure that each state has many sub-districts covered by electricity.

Ms. Kapinga said this on May 29, 2025 in parliament in Dodoma while responding to a question by the Member of Parliament for Simanjiro, Mr. Christopher Olesendeka who asked how the Government has planned to implement sub-district projects based on the geography of Simanjiro District where the distance from one sub-district to another is more than ten kilometers.

“Honorable Deputy Speaker, we are implementing these Subdistrict projects based on additional criteria, we have looked at the size of the constituency, the size of the Subdistricts and the economic and social needs in the constituency. Let me assure Members of Parliament that you will see the difference in these projects that we are currently implementing”, said, Mrs. Kapinga

Responding to a question by Nyasa Member of Parliament Mrs. Stella Manyanya who asked about Songea Pori Subdistrict located in Lunyele Village and Nindi Subdistrict located in Konganywita Village being connected to electricity, Mrs. Kapinga said that these Subdistricts have undergone a feasibility study and it was determined that they require a medium voltage electricity transmission line for a distance of three kilometers.

She said the Government expects to connect these Subdistricts through the Subdistrict Electrification Project Phase II B (HEP IIB) whose implementation will begin in the 2025/2026 financial year.

Regarding the slow pace of the Contractor implementing electricity projects in Nyasa State, Mrs. Kapinga said the Government has already met with the Contractor and instructed him to employ subcontractors in his projects.

Responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Nkasi North, Mrs. Aida Khenani who sought the Government’s statement on the delay of the Contractor who has been assigned the task of supplying electricity to the Suburbs surrounding Lake Tanganyika, Mrs. Kapinga said that in the implementation of Suburb projects, the Government has ensured that it finds professional contractors.

Regarding Contractors who are delaying, Mrs. Kapinga on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko has instructed the Director General of the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to supervise the Contractor implementing the electricity project in the Suburbs surrounding Lake Tanganyika.

She has also instructed him to take additional steps for the Contractor to ensure that he implements the project quickly and professionally.
