Tanzania (TANESCO) for the successful management and implementation of the 50 Megawatt Kishapu Solar Power Project being implemented in Shinyanga Region.
The commendations were given by the Committee Chairman, Mrs. Subira Mgallu, immediately after the Committee visited the project, on March 13, 2026, with the aim of observing the progress of its implementation as well as the effectiveness of the use of funds provided by the Government.
Speaking immediately after the visit,Mrs. Mgallu said the project is an important step in the transformation of the country’s energy sector due to the use of renewable energy technology.
“We have visited this solar power generation project and we see it as a major revolution in the country’s energy sector. This is an important step as for the first time Tanzania is getting 50 Megawatts of electricity from solar energy”, said Mrs. Mgallu.
She said the Committee is satisfied with the way the funds provided by the Government for the implementation of the project have been used appropriately and to achieve the successful implementation of the project.
“As the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, we are satisfied with the use of funds provided by the Government for this project. We clearly see that the funds have been well spent in the implementation of this project worth approximately 118 billion shillings”, she said.
She said the project has already started contributing 50 Megawatts to the National Grid System, a step that contributes to increasing the country’s electricity generation capacity as well as strengthening diversified energy sources.
“The implementation of this project demonstrates the Government’s commitment to ensuring that there are various sources of electricity generation. This increases the security of access to electricity in the country,” she said.
The Minister for Energy, Mr. Deogratius Ndejembi said the Kishapu project is being implemented in two phases where the first phase of 50 Megawatts has already been completed and has started feeding electricity into the National Grid.
“This project has two phases where the first phase of 50 Megawatts has already been completed and has started feeding electricity into the National Grid. The second phase will involve the production of 100 Megawatts more making a total of 150 Megawatts from this project,” said Mr. Ndejembi.
The committee has given the Rai to the Ministry of Energy and TANESCO is continuing with strategies to start the implementation of the second phase of the project to further increase the country’s electricity generation capacity.
