Government satisfied with construction of Iganjo Mbeya power project

Mbeya: The Minister for Energy, Mr. Deogratius Ndejembi, has said he is satisfied with the progress of the construction of the 400 Kilowatt Iganjo Power Receiving and Cooling Station Project in Mbeya region which has currently reached approximately 60% of its implementation.

Mr. Ndejembi made the statement on March 08, 2026 during a visit to inspect the progress of the project being implemented by the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) in the Iganjo area of Mbeya which is part of the Electricity Transmission Route Project from Irunga Region to Rukwa Region (TAZA).

“Overall, the work here is going very well. I congratulate the TANESCO Electricity Corporation for the good management of this project,” said Mr. Ndejembi

Explaining the benefits of the project, he said that it will contribute to improving the availability of electricity in Mbeya Region and neighboring regions.

“This project will increase the power supply because currently Mbeya Region receives electricity from a 220 kilowatt line but this project will be 400 kilowatt. Citizens will benefit from this project because electricity will be cooled and distributed to the citizens”, said Mr. Ndejembi

He said the government led by the sixth term President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan continues to invest in major strategic energy projects to improve the state of electricity supply for economic and social development.

Tanzania – Zambia (TAZA) Project Coordinator Engineer Elias Makunga said the Iganjo station project is progressing well despite minor challenges that arose in the stages of equipment distribution.

“The Iganjo substation project is 60% complete, with the foundation construction 89% complete. We are 89% complete with the supply of equipment from China but we have had a few challenges with the receipt of equipment related to improving the TRA system”, said Engineer Makunga

The 400 kV transmission line project from Iringa to Rukwa, when completed, is expected to be among the key projects in strengthening the National Grid and increasing access to reliable electricity in the Southern Highlands region.
